Transforming our World – Expanding our Abilities to Collaborate

The pandemic has changed our world and forced us to collaborate in new ways. Virtual teamwork is here to stay as we connect and reconnect with our teams around the world.  In fact, futurist Gerd Leonhard uses the following quote to describe the transformation taking place:

“Only a crisis – actual or perceived – produces real change. When that crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend on the ideas that are lying around. That, I believe, is our basic function: to develop alternatives to existing policies, to keep them alive and available until the politically impossible becomes the politically inevitable.”

Leonhard has coined a new term called hyper-collaboration.  Here is a short YouTube video where he describes the enormous changes we are facing and how we need to be prepared for the future.

The important question for each of us is what do we bring to the team around our ability to collaborate and enable these transformational shifts?  Our HBDI profiles can offer a great deal of insight into this.  We can look at it from both a preference and a skill mindset. This also brings up more questions for an entire team…topics like:

  • What have we learned about collaboration during the pandemic? Especially while working virtually?
  • How has what we’ve learned affected our individual and team dynamics or behaviors?
  • What can we bring back to an in-person environment to sustain or enhance collaboration?
  • Can we do more to support virtual and global interactions?
  • Has the pandemic transformed our ability to be creative and innovative as a team?

Key Takeaways:  As the video highlights, our continual focus must be on reinventing, communicating, collaborating, and focusing on building trust with each other no matter where we are located.  This will enable us to flourish as a team.  It’s always important to have this happen on a consistent basis, but as we come back and meet in-person, it is a great time to reset and reconnect with our teams in new and different ways.  It is also important to keep a pulse on how things are changing so we can be more aware of how our decisions and creative efforts are impacting the larger world.
